Srinagar, Jan 10 (KNO): The first-ever winter carnival organised by the Shopian administration is set to begin tomorrow at Dubjan along the historic Mughal Road. The two-day event, named Heemal-Nagrai aims to promote Dubjan as a prominent tourist destination. According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the carnival will have a wide range of activities, including snow crafts, snow igloos, ice sports, competitions for children, and exhibitions showcasing local cuisine and arts. The event seeks to highlight the rich heritage of the district by engaging locals in adventure activities, arts and cultural exhibitions. The district administration has made extensive arrangements, with various departments working in coordination to ensure the carnival's success and to boost tourism in the Mughal Road region, the Heerpora Wildlife Sanctuary and the Historic Sarais circuit. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shopian, Shahid Saleem said effective planning and inter-departmental collaboration are crucial to create a memorable experience for visitors. “This event aims to promote Dubjan as a major tourist destination,” he said. Dubjan holds historical importance as the Mughal Road runs through it, connecting other notable tourist spots such as Sukh Sarai, Aliabad Sarai, Lal Ghulam, and Pir Ki Gali. The carnival derives its name from the two iconic springs, Heemal and Nagrai, located in Balpora and Safan Naman. These springs are linked to the legendary love story of Aryan princess Heemal and Naga king Nagrai. Locals have been urged to participate in the festivities, which are expected to showcase the unique cultural and natural heritage of Shopian. The carnival is also seen as a major initiative to highlight the region's tourism potential and provide a platform for local talent, adventure enthusiasts and small businesses—(KNO)
